After difficult good byes, which we'd we'd been dreading since we started the trip, jen and i parted ways and immediately wondered how we could last 2 weeks without seeing each other...

as she headed west back to sunny LA, i worked my way further east for my first trip into russia.  after a bit of trouble @ the airport, which i overcame with my most pitiful bewildered "please help" look, after discovering the immigration papers that greeted me were in every language _except_ english, the russians took enough pity on me to welcome me into their country, where i spent the next week or so.

china wasn't as hard to get into, and the hospitality there [which i never take for granted] was quite a bit warmer than russia, which made that leg of my lonely trek a bit more tolerable.

TO BE CONTINUED!...

Russia...

st. petersburg...  hermitage museum, st. isaac's cathedral, the grand hotel europe for caviar and champagne, a few laps up and down nevskiy prospekt, and some great little hot dogs wrapped in pastry sold by vendors all over.

Moscow...  the Kremlin, red square, st. basil's cathedral, GUM, a bit of aimless wandering, and a few more sites of not much interest.

China...
Beijing...  forbidden city, temple of heaven, Tiananmen square, summer palace, & various city wandering.

Shanghai...  jin mao observatory, suzhou [lion grave garden & humble administrator's garden], zhou zuan [miniature venice-esque city], the bund, yu yaun garden, jade budha temple, [? market]

Hong Kong...  the peak, an accidental ferry ride to lantau, lan kwai fong, the tin hau & wong tai sin temples, a nervous phone call to jen's parents to ask for their blessings for our marriage, the beautiful peninsula hotel for a bit o' wine, and the felix restaurant on the top for a delicious farewell dinner.
